Description: A wide-leg trouser from Thierry Mugler's Spring/Summer 2001 haute couture collection, cut from sheer dark-brown mesh and worked all over with rounded square appliqués in glossy black leather and matte velvet, arranged in graphic vertical rows from waist to floor-sweeping hem. The transparent ground reveals the leg beneath while the tactile appliqués lend rhythm, weight and a futuristic, almost armoured texture. A flat waistband and a dramatic flared silhouette complete the piece, a study in contrasts between bare and embellished, fluid and structured. The hand-applied patchwork is central to this piece, each leather and velvet element is individually attached to the sheer mesh, a labour-intensive technique that elevates it from ready-to-wear to true haute couture.
